Making Simple Storage Boxes for My Workshop

One my first real projects using pine wood – simple storage boxes for my tools.

I ordered a lot of pine wood recently but didn’t expect that some boards would be warped / bent. To be honest I don’t know how to “un-warp” them and I do not have fancy tools like a planer or jointer.

I thought the best use for these boards will be to make some storage boxes. After all, it would give me some sacrificial pieces to experiment with different finishes. They do not need to look good, they just need to hold some tools.

I set about creating these using my Bosch GTS1031 table saw to cut the pieces I needed, and a belt sander to flatten the surfaces as much as I could. I ended up having to fill a lot of the gaps with some filler, but it all turned out pretty ok in the end.

To add some style I decided to use my Dremel routing table to add curved edges. They turned out on in some and a bit rough in others, again due to the curved and warped surface of the pine wood I had to work with.

Then I sanded it all down with my Bosch random orbit sander to get a smooth finish and to remove most of the wood filler. I sanded the inside parts before gluing them together with some good glue.

I ended up making a few mistakes in measurement which I corrected. It also helped me get a lot of hand-on experience using the table saw for miter cuts, turning the blade 45 degrees and ripping with the fence. I have never really done this before.

With all the flaws, I think I ended up with some decent looking boxes.
