If you’re looking to create your first DIY project, making wooden fridge magnets is probably one of the easiest. These make pretty good gifts as well, as you can customise them with names or even paint them.
You can make wooden fridge magnets from almost any size wood scrap, and a few neodymium magnets. These type of magnets are really strong and don’t lose their magnetism. They are available in many different shapes and sizes. Generally speaking, get the round ones that match the size of drill bits you have.
Here I’m using leftover African Teak from my wood chisel handle project, with 8mm x 2mm magnets.
All you have to do is drill an appropriately sized hole right in the middle of the scrap. Then, glue in the magnets with CA or epoxy. I prefer epoxy for the longer curing time.
Finally, sand the wood up to 240 grit. I prefer to sand up to 600 grit. Finish with boiled linseed oil or Danish oil. You can even paint them or decorate them however you like.
