DIY Business Card Stand from Pen Blanks

A business card stand or name card display stand is perhaps one of the easiest projects you can make as a woodworker, with just a table saw and some scraps.

I had a ton of pen blanks, while and parts, that I held on to for way too long. Now that I’m moving to a new workshop, I decided to either find a way to use the scraps or get rid of them.

To make a business card stand, you technically only need a single rectangle piece of a wood scrap or pen blank.

Black Ash Burl and Box Elder Burl

I decided to make mine from black ash burl and box elder burl. These two species of wood are as compatible as walnut and maple.

Wood Scraps

I used the table saw to cut about 1/4 the height of a typical business card. I made a few passes to get the depth cut to the right size. Then I glued the box elder scrap to the bottom.

Later, I cut the piece to length on a table saw and rounded the edges with my Shinto rasp.

Here’s a picture of my DIY name card stand along with some DIY memory card holders made from maple, red oak and Honduran mahogany.

You should sand it to 240 grit at least. I went much higher because of all the burls. Then I rubbed a few coats of Danish oil on the stand.

The best part of this name card stand project (other than making something you can quickly sell in under 30 minutes) is that you can make them in any shape and thickness you want.

They make excellent gifts, have a lot of room for engraving and customisations, and are so easy to ship or pack. So make a business card stand today, and you’ll wonder why you threw away all those scraps last week!
